Week 3 Assignment 3

Essay about positive psychology within ?Precious and her Hair? by Ifeona Fulani
Precious and her hair is a story that a lot of girls tend to follow, it is a story about how a girl would take herself to the extremes and do anything just to get a boy who doesn?t even notice them. The story takes place in Jamaica, and the main character is a 17 year old high school girl named Precious, who has a mad crush on a boy who is slightly older than she is, and does not even take notice of Precious.
Precious would watch him everyday on his way to school, and saw that he liked girls with long waivy hair. Now normally that wouldn?t be a problem, but Precious had only a head of short rough curls. She wanted to do anything to change herself into a girl that he would like, which shows a lack of genuiness. Precious considered herself to be pretty insignificant, and did not know the influence that she had at her school. That is shown in the part of the story where Precious goes to the local hair dresser, and decides to get a weave of braids in her hair, she did that while constantly being reminded, by her mom, that the boy she liked was no good. The problem was that her hair was so short and weak that the weave fell off her head along with the rest of her short curls, so Precious was left bald. After her mom sees this, we see just how popular Precious really is, because she wore a big turban to school, to conceal her head, and started a whole new trend at her school, where as she made something that people thought was ugly, and completely ?mom? style, into the next fashion craze at her school. All the while Precious did not even notice because she was still trying to figure out how to make the boy love her.
After the wreck of her hair, Precious goes to the village elder, who knows many different potions and remedies for all kinds of problems. So Precious goes to see her one day, and the elder lady, who is rich in wisdom, gives her this potion to give Precious a long flowing head of hair. I think that the older lady lady was really just trying to test Precious to see exactly how far she would go to get a boy that she liked. I say this because in order to get the boy she liked, Precious would have to put the potion, which consisted of literal shit, on her head every night for three months. Now I don?t know about you, but I wouldn?t want a girl who rubbed shit on her head every night just to try and get my attention. At the end of the story, Precious sees the boy she likes with a white girl, who he had never even seen before. The part that really opened Precious? eyes was the fact that the girl was just a tourist. That let Precious know that the boy was just out to get any girl he could and that he did not want Precious.

Week 3 Assignment 2
Positive Psychology
What I learned about positive psychology, is that little pieces of happiness, like watching a movie, or playing videogames are not what gives authentic- happiness. Authentic-Happiness comes from being so deeply involved with what you love to do, that time seems to not even exist, where you don?t even worry about what is going on with the rest of your life, i.e. ?what am I having for dinner tonight,? or other trivial things such as that, because for that limited amount of time, all you can think about is doing what gives you meaning or purpose in life.

Week 2 Assignment 4

One signature strength that I have that I did not post on my blog is Kokoro, which is Japanese for heart. I?m not talking about the heart that beats in your chest, or the caring loving heart that is soft and warm, I?m talking about the heart that will pick you up after getting shot in the chest three times, the heart that will make a person survive even the toughest conditions possible. Kokoro is drive, tenacity, will, and perserverance. What the heart is really made up of.
I have been involved in martial arts for the past 10 years of my life, and I have found no place else that pushes me past my limits than West-Wind Karate Schools.
In West-Wind there is a program called instructors training, where the best students, usually between the ages of 14 and 24, are chosen to become part of the instructing staff of West-Wind. In instructors training, I was pushed to the point where I could no longer feel, I no longer cared about physical pain, or emotional stress. I was so exhausted, that to this day I still don?t remember what was going on, because of the physical stress that we were put under, and that is when Kokoro comes in, right at that point where you think it is over, when all odds are against you, and you have used up every last ounce of strength within you just to get to another obstacle, you either have it or you don?t, that is where success and failure are, or to go even deeper, life or death, and that is probably the most important trait that humans possess, the ability to survive.

Week 1 Assignment 7

September 7, 2006

I chose to write about the Red State blog, and the post that I chose talked about the differences between Democrats and Republicans during the 1992 elections, when Clinton went against George H.W. Bush, Clinton mentioned the problems of getting a fair revenue from people making over $200k a year, and also how the capitalist system needed to become more balanced and equal. While Bush Sr. talked more about how America is the best country in the world and how we can “toot” our horn over just that simple fact. It doesn’t seem right to me to ignore stating the problems of the country, sometimes we have to admit our faults, because once we stop being so arrogant, we can see our problems better and fix them.

Week 1 Assignment 6

Clyde Tombaugh was born on Feb. 4, 1906 on a farm near Streator, Illinois. Clyde Tombaugh was the man who discovered the elusive former planet Pluto, when he was just 24 years old using a photographic telescope from the 1930’s. He compared the feat of finding Pluto to “finding a needle in a haystack.” Now just recently the International Astronomical Union voted on a new definition of a planet, and Pluto did not make the cut, and is now considered a dwarf planet along with Ceres and the newly discovered 2003 UB313.

Week 1 Assignment 5

September 7, 2006

I looked up a blog about Japanese culture, that focused on Shinto-Buddhism, the url is http://www.nihonbunka.com/shinto/blog, It shows a lot of differences from our western culture, the concept of post-death judgement is not as strong in Japan as it is over here in the western world.

I learned that after death, according to Shinto Buddhism, people are judged not at the gates of heaven, but at the gates of hell. “Enma-sama,” (translated as Mister Enma), is the one who judges the people. As soon as a person dies they go to be judged, and have there tongue taken away, to prevent them from trying to justify the wrongs that they have done. After being judged, Enma-sama will choose which of the six paths a dead person will take, some people go straight to hell, some are born again starving, some are born again as an animal, some are born into war, some are born again as a human, and lastly, some are born again in heaven. It differs from Christian ways of thinking a lot, I was taught that there was either heaven or hell, and that you dont get a second chance at things.

Week 1 Assignment 4

September 7, 2006

For assignment 4 I looked up the word nick name at answers.com, and it is written as nick name, and is a descriptive name added to or replacing the proper name of a person, place, or thing.
http://www.answers.com/nicknames is the url for the site where I found out the definition

I have a nick name, but it is only used at my martial arts school, it is Mr. President, that name was given to me at a very young age when I first started to take martial arts, because of my intellect and my ability to learn in any way, they said that I was smarter than the President of the time and it also goes well with my real name.

A blog is a frequent reverse chronological posting of personal thoughts ideas or interest usually involving links to the web a blog is not for social gathering or to meet friends, even though some people may end up finding friends due to the sharing of deep personal thoughts and feelings, a blog is also posted in reverse chronological order, for all of us “English” speaking people, that means to find an older post you have to scroll down farther, while the newer post are more easily accessible. The blog that I choose to visit frequently is located at this url http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/
I chose this blog because astronomy is a subject that I cannot become bored of no matter what part of astronomy is being discussed, also because astronomy is so mysterious, and we know so little, so there is still much to learn in that particular field, as Carl Sagan said in his book Cosmos, we are standing on a beach in front of the vast ocean which is the universe, and we have barely got our toes wet.
