Week 6 Assignment 2

October 25, 2006

Of the 5 top strengths that I have, the one that will benefit me the most on this assignment is perseverance, because I have never had an assignment like this and I will probably get it wrong the first time, so I know it is going to take a second try, also, another strength that will help me is integrity, knowing that I will get the assignment done just because I said I will. It?s a simple goal of keeping my word to myself, even though at times it isn?t so simple.

Week 6

October 25, 2006

Mark Foley, a six-term Republican Congressman, was caught sending sexual e-mails to boys between the ages of 16 and 17, even after being confronted by ABC 7 news about the sexual pages sent to the teenage boys back in the year 2003, Foley has yet to plead his innocence to what he was accused of. Here is a small post that I found at http://americablog.blogspot.com/2006/10/white-house-downplays-foley-scandal-as.html

White House Press Secretary Tony Snow, appearing on CNN this morning, downplayed the Foley scandal. Soledad later noted that Snow “tried really hard to minimize the impact and any kind of political fallout.”

Soledad asks as “a parent” why any communication between a 16-year old page and a Member of Congress doesn’t “raise red flags, major, massive red flags.” Snow responds, “[I]t’s not always pretty up there on Capitol Hill. And there have been other scandals, as you know, that have been more than simply naughty e-mails.”

ThinkProgress has the video of the Bush White House defending a child sex predator.

“Simply naughty emails”? That’s all they were says the Bush White House. Just naughty emails between a 52 year old member of Congress and some 16 and 17 year old childen. Just naughty emails when a grown man asks a sixteen year old boy to measure his penis. Just naughty emails when a member of Congress asks a child to describe how he masturbates.

That’s why the GOP House leadership is scrambling. That’s why they had to call in the FBI. That’s why the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating.

I looked at a post from this site http://www.csmonitor.com/2006/1006/p02s01-uspo.html

And found out that after Mark Foley resigned, he checked into an alcohol rehabilitation center, citing alcoholism and other ?behavioral issues?, he also announced, through his lawyer, that he was gay and sexually abused by a priest when he was younger, and that he had “never attempted to have sexual contact with a minor.”

Week 5 Assignment 2

October 25, 2006

One of the best strengths of Spiderman is bravery, he was the only person in his line of work, and he knew that every task he faced would be one that he would have to do alone. Spiderman was the protector of the people, and he stood up for good no matter who the enemy was, whether it be his lifelong hero, ?Dr. Octopus,? or his best friends father, ?Green Goblin.?

Spiderman was also very modest, he didn?t go around boasting about his freakish abilities, or showing off. He stayed hidden most of the time, and just about everyone thought he was just regular old Peter Parker.

Spiderman was also very forgiving, he didn?t hold grudges, and he always gave his enemies a chance of just submitting instead of having their asses kicked in a brutal fashion.

Spiderman was also very Fair, he considered himself a guardian of the people, and had his mind locked on the fact that no one was better than anyone else, he was there to ensure that no one would be exploited, or treated unfairly.

One area that I think spiderman was not strong in is Integrity, he was always saying that he would be somewhere, but never was, he was fired from his job as a pizza delivery boy after receiving many ?second? chances to succeed, he hurt his friend Mary Jane, when he constantly said that he would watch her perform at her show, but never was able to show up until it was too late.

Week 3 Assignment 3

September 25, 2006
Essay about positive psychology within ?Precious and her Hair? by Ifeona Fulani
Precious and her hair is a story that a lot of girls tend to follow, it is a story about how a girl would take herself to the extremes and do anything just to get a boy who doesn?t even notice them. The story takes place in Jamaica, and the main character is a 17 year old high school girl named Precious, who has a mad crush on a boy who is slightly older than she is, and does not even take notice of Precious.
Precious would watch him everyday on his way to school, and saw that he liked girls with long waivy hair. Now normally that wouldn?t be a problem, but Precious had only a head of short rough curls. She wanted to do anything to change herself into a girl that he would like, which shows a lack of genuiness. Precious considered herself to be pretty insignificant, and did not know the influence that she had at her school. That is shown in the part of the story where Precious goes to the local hair dresser, and decides to get a weave of braids in her hair, she did that while constantly being reminded, by her mom, that the boy she liked was no good. The problem was that her hair was so short and weak that the weave fell off her head along with the rest of her short curls, so Precious was left bald. After her mom sees this, we see just how popular Precious really is, because she wore a big turban to school, to conceal her head, and started a whole new trend at her school, where as she made something that people thought was ugly, and completely ?mom? style, into the next fashion craze at her school. All the while Precious did not even notice because she was still trying to figure out how to make the boy love her.
After the wreck of her hair, Precious goes to the village elder, who knows many different potions and remedies for all kinds of problems. So Precious goes to see her one day, and the elder lady, who is rich in wisdom, gives her this potion to give Precious a long flowing head of hair. I think that the older lady lady was really just trying to test Precious to see exactly how far she would go to get a boy that she liked. I say this because in order to get the boy she liked, Precious would have to put the potion, which consisted of literal shit, on her head every night for three months. Now I don?t know about you, but I wouldn?t want a girl who rubbed shit on her head every night just to try and get my attention. At the end of the story, Precious sees the boy she likes with a white girl, who he had never even seen before. The part that really opened Precious? eyes was the fact that the girl was just a tourist. That let Precious know that the boy was just out to get any girl he could and that he did not want Precious.

Week 3 Assignment 2
Positive Psychology
What I learned about positive psychology, is that little pieces of happiness, like watching a movie, or playing videogames are not what gives authentic- happiness. Authentic-Happiness comes from being so deeply involved with what you love to do, that time seems to not even exist, where you don?t even worry about what is going on with the rest of your life, i.e. ?what am I having for dinner tonight,? or other trivial things such as that, because for that limited amount of time, all you can think about is doing what gives you meaning or purpose in life.

Week 2 Assignment 4

One signature strength that I have that I did not post on my blog is Kokoro, which is Japanese for heart. I?m not talking about the heart that beats in your chest, or the caring loving heart that is soft and warm, I?m talking about the heart that will pick you up after getting shot in the chest three times, the heart that will make a person survive even the toughest conditions possible. Kokoro is drive, tenacity, will, and perserverance. What the heart is really made up of.
I have been involved in martial arts for the past 10 years of my life, and I have found no place else that pushes me past my limits than West-Wind Karate Schools.
In West-Wind there is a program called instructors training, where the best students, usually between the ages of 14 and 24, are chosen to become part of the instructing staff of West-Wind. In instructors training, I was pushed to the point where I could no longer feel, I no longer cared about physical pain, or emotional stress. I was so exhausted, that to this day I still don?t remember what was going on, because of the physical stress that we were put under, and that is when Kokoro comes in, right at that point where you think it is over, when all odds are against you, and you have used up every last ounce of strength within you just to get to another obstacle, you either have it or you don?t, that is where success and failure are, or to go even deeper, life or death, and that is probably the most important trait that humans possess, the ability to survive.
